EDUCATION FACILITY

LEXINGTON, KY

The University of Kentucky is the only nationally accredited school of architecture in the state. As many growing programs, the college of design is fast outgrowing its original home on campus. We proposed designing a new fabrication laboratory on a mostly unused part of campus. The goal was to use existing campus axes as an ordering tool and create an artery that establishes circulation, hierarchy and order of spaces. This axis will be anchored by the new building and other forms along the path. With its unique position and newly proposed main campus entrance adjacency we were able to propose a building that responds to the old industrial aesthetic while celebrating the process manufacturing in the design. The site is situated along the valley of a large berm that currently is the low point across the entire site. In our proposal we used the contours to create a sustainable rainwater harvesting and retention pond along the perimeter of the building.
