SHOTGUN HOUSE ADDITION

LOUISVILLE, KY

Baron Gibson Designs was commissioned to design an addition to this historic shotgun house, located in the Butchertown district of historic Louisville. The clients requested an ambitious design program that fulfilled the functional need for a larger living area that is open to the backyard while preserving the nature of the historic home. The design follows the natural orientation and direction of the shotgun house maintaining privacy along the sides and allowing all views to open towards the back. The chimney is centered on the house and is flanked on either side by Nana-Wall doors that fold open to allow the entire back facade to be open up to the backyard. The new chimney allows for equal door openings on either side, bringing balance and symmetry to the contemporary design.
