MILLSTONE
LEXINGTON, KY
Located within historic Dudley Square along Mill Street in downtown Lexington, Millstone was conceived as a new restaurant carefully integrated into an established architectural setting. The project called for an addition that could create a distinct identity for the restaurant while remaining deferential to the scale, character, and history of the existing building.
Rather than replicating the historic architecture, the addition takes a complementary approach. Painted masonry, expansive steel-inspired windows and doors, exposed wood structure, and a restrained material palette establish a subtle dialogue between old and new. Inside, tall windows and transoms bring abundant natural light into the dining room while creating a strong visual connection to the surrounding streetscape and outdoor spaces.
The architecture extends beyond the building to a raised dining terrace organized around the site's mature trees. The terrace creates an intimate, garden-like setting and allows the restaurant to engage Mill Street while preserving the landscape that gives Dudley Square much of its character.
Together, the interior dining room and outdoor terrace give Millstone a warm, contemporary identity rooted in its historic context—a new addition designed to feel as though it belongs.
