This colonial cape cod is more than a renovation; it is a thoughtful act of architectural stewardship. Originally designed by prominent Lexington architect Robert McMeekin, the home stands as a refined example of early 20th-century Colonial-influenced design within the historic Ashland Park neighborhood. Purchased in 2024, the project sought to restore, expand, and elevate the home while honoring its original character and architectural legacy.

Set on a prominent corner lot at Chinoe Road and Ashwood, the property is enclosed by a beautifully crafted brick wall that defines a private, garden-like setting. This sense of enclosure and permanence provided the foundation for a design approach rooted in proportion and authenticity ensuring that the new additions feel as though they have always belonged.

The exterior renovations were carefully composed to reinforce McMeekin’s original vision. The garage was reconstructed and enhanced with a new porte-cochère, creating a formal and gracious arrival sequence along Ashwood. Front dormers were reconstructed to refine their proportions and detailing, while select trim elements throughout the home were reintroduced or adjusted to better align with historic precedent. A new exterior chimney was added at the side-yard porch, providing both function and architectural balance.

At the rear of the home, a new covered porch extends the living spaces outward, offering a seamless connection between interior and exterior garden. Traditional materials, brick, stone caps, classical columns, and period-appropriate roof forms were used throughout to ensure continuity between old and new construction.

Inside, the renovation focused on enhancing livability without compromising architectural integrity. A comprehensive renovation of the primary bedroom suite introduced modern comfort while preserving traditional scale and detailing. A new mudroom discreetly connects the main house to the reconstructed garage, accommodating daily life while maintaining the home’s formal spatial hierarchy.

Throughout the project, materials and craftsmanship were paramount. Brick masonry, limestone and stone accents, refined wood trim profiles, and historically appropriate detailing were executed with precision and care. Every design decision was guided by the belief that the best renovations are those that feel timeless rather than new.
